Play-Based Kindergarten

גן למידה מבוססת משחק

In our play-based kindergarten, teachers structure play-time to create learning moments by thinking about collaboration, communication, creative and critical thinking skills. As children play, they will chat with their friends, and figure out how to stop their block tower from falling. The students will draw pictures and role play. They'll also tell stories and sit quietly to listen to others. All of these activities help kids develop, learn, and eventually acquire the skills that they will need for future success in school. Through their play, JCDS' Nitzanim (kindergarteners) learn how to act in school, be part of a community, and learn.

An Example from Our Classroom:

The theme for our Gan Nitzan (kindergarten) year is Mi Ani: Who Am I? Across all activities and curricular units, students explore their identities and develop a strong sense of self-confidence. We organize around seven "I am"statements:

  • I am Jewish.
  • I am an American.
  • I am a friend.
  • I am creative.
  • I am a problem solver.
  • I am a reader and writer.
  • I am an artist.
As our kindergarteners engage in our integrated educational program, they come to understand themselves as integrated human beings.
