Relationships are at the heart of everything at JCDS, and we know that when students feel wholly embraced and understood, they are more able to build the needed courage to stretch, take risks, and learn. Within our warm and nurturing school, students live out our mission to open hearts, open minds, and ultimately, open worlds.
...
We are in the business of teaching to the whole child. We are not simply teaching content, we are teaching content to impressionable, inquisitive children. We value each child as a unique member of our community with the belief that all are created b'tzelem Elohim, in the image of God, and that we, the adults, must open our eyes wide to understand and foster each of them holistically. In deep partnership with parents, we embrace this calling and strive every single day to help guide our children to learn, by teaching them to better understand themselves and their relationship to their Jewish and secular worlds.
We believe that a spirit of inquiry enables students to uncover boundless possibilities, thus we shape our program with discovery at its core; questioning is encouraged, and student voices shape every classroom experience. JCDS kids practice healthy, open-minded debate! We also take learning in partnership, in Hevruta, seriously, as it is through this particular approach to learning that students develop the skills to listen, inquire, and remain open and respectful of differing opinions. Approaching learning with a stance of wonder and humility helps develop resilience and the ability to hold multiple perspectives. Today's world demands this of our youth, and our alumni exhibit this truth. With thirty years behind us, hundreds of JCDS graduates are making a positive difference in the world in professions as disparate as our pluralistic community. Environmentalists, artists, thespians, physicians, dentists, educators, professors, scientists, athletes, and many others are opening hearts, opening minds, and opening worlds throughout the globe.
I am so proud to lead this amazing school. From the bottom of my heart, I believe that spending one's formative years with us best prepares youth for the world that lies ahead. Students leave JCDS knowing themselves fully as learners, companions, friends, and members of the broad Jewish community. By the time they leave our nurturing JCDS family, our graduates enter high school with confidence, openness, and self-pride in who they are as individuals and Jews. Our alumni return to us frequently, each knowing they are forever an integral member of the JCDS family.
Please, come visit! The best way to get to know us is to feel the warmth in our halls, hear the wafting melodies of t'fillot, see the stunning student artwork adorning our walls, hear Hebrew throughout the classrooms… but most of all, to see for yourself, the happiness and jubilation on the faces of our students.
