Men's Torah Study Group

Men's Torah Study Group

Approximately two Friday mornings a month, from 8 AM to 9 AM, a roomful of men who have some connection to JCDS gather in the school's beit midrash, to study Torah. Led by the inspiring Mel Brown, the men read just one line of Torah each week. They read it in Hebrew, translate it, consider many possible alternative translations, and then dive in and discuss. As a warm-up, they consider a "question of the week," which is brought each week by a different participant. The process is thought-provoking and very enjoyable. So much so, that no one wants to leave the group. Men's Torah Study attendees now include alumni dads and former board members.

Women's Torah Study Group

Women's Torah Study Group

Women's Torah Study meets in the library on approximately alternate Friday mornings. Light food and socializing begin at the 8am school dropoff and study is from 8:15 - 9:15. The style varies based on our diverse leaders. We are working our way through the stories of Abraham, Sarah and Lot in Lech Lecha and onward using close reading of the Torah text in English and Hebrew, asking questions, studying commentary ancient and modern and making connections to our own lives. No Torah knowledge or experience is necessary.
